Becky's Job - Healthy Communities

Ok, so for those of you who are wondering what exactly it is that brought us out to WA state in the first place (and haven't gotten an earful from me yet!), here are a couple of links for you to check out:

The Public Health Prevention Service is the fellowship program that I am in at the CDC. I'm about halfway through the 3-year program, which included a year at their offices in Atlanta and 2 years at my field placement here in Snohomish County, WA.

More specifically, Healthy Communities is the name of the project I am working on here...my office is trying to get a website going to explain the work we are doing with 3 different cities in Snohomish County, but until that's ready you can check out the WA DOH site for some details. Basically, we are working with local communities to find environmental and policy approaches to help residents improve nutrition and increase physical activity. Examples of things we might work on include: sidewalks, menu labeling, safe routes to school (so kids can walk or ride their bikes instead of riding in cars or buses), community design, healthy vending options, community gardens, access to low cost or free recreational opportunities, etc etc...Ask me for more details if you're interested!
